HSE Laboratory Information System

The Laboratory Information System is the new national system that will help manage patients' tests. The system is also known as MedLIS. It will help improve how patients are:

• diagnosed
• monitored
• screened

Why the Laboratory Information System matters

Many labs still use local or older systems. This can be less efficient and take more time.

With the new system, healthcare workers will be able to easily book tests and access more accurate results faster. Patient lab information will be available at all times. This means patients will get faster, higher quality care, with better treatment results.

The benefits of the Laboratory Information System

The benefits include:

• patient records are better organised and stored securely
• faster test results
• healthcare workers can ask for tests more easily
• results and records can be shared quickly between healthcare providers and labs
• test administration is streamlined
• GPs (family doctors) get clearer information

Laboratory Information System and blood tests

A key benefit of MedLIS is improved collection and processing of blood tests. This will make the work of lab staff and healthcare workers easier and more seamless. It will also provide a better experience for patients waiting on blood test results.

Laboratory Information System rollout

The project will improve all hospital laboratories across Ireland. Right now, there are 43 hospital labs that do medical tests for patients throughout the HSE, many using older systems.

The system was first launched in Beaumont Hospital in Dublin in August 2024. Now, the focus is on the North-East of Ireland. Cavan and Monaghan Hospital will start using it in April 2026. After that, the other hospitals in the area will follow.

Over time, it will be in every HSE funded lab. The HSE aims for all 43 hospitals to be using MedLIS by the year 2029.
