Mid West Hospitals Patient Council

The Mid West Hospitals Patient Council (formerly UL Hospitals Group Patient Council) was set up in 2016.

We are a group of volunteers from different backgrounds who aim to improve the experiences of patients, service users and their families.

What we do

We provide an independent voice for patients and service users in Mid West acute hospitals.

We support patients and service users in:

University Hospital Limerick (UHL)
Ennis Hospital
Nenagh Hospital
Croom Orthopaedic Hospital
University Maternity Hospital Limerick

Our members work with hospital committees to improve patient experiences and health outcomes.

Urgent and Emergency Care
Maternity Experience
End of Life Care
Patient Complaints
Paediatric Experience

Who we work with

We work with different HSE teams to make sure the patient voice is included when services are planned, developed and improved to meet the needs of our communities.

We work closely with HSE staff to help improve services for patients and service users.

This includes areas such as:

nutrition
hospital facilities
accessibility
signage
patient surveys
transport

Projects we work on

We share our ideas and feedback on a range of projects that help improve patient care and hospital services.

These include the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI) accreditation programme. We contribute to Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) projects, such as the National Inpatient Experience Survey and the Review of Emergency Services in the Mid West.

We continue to work on other projects that help improve the quality of care and the experiences of patients and service users.

We work with the Patient and Service User Council and other patient and service user focused organisations.

We bring together community members and hospital staff to improve the experiences of patients, service users and their families.

Together, we support the delivery of patient-centred care and work to improve healthcare services across the Mid West.

How to get involved

The council meets 6 times a year. You will be asked to volunteer for a 2-year term, with the option to continue for longer.

Before you join, you must complete Garda vetting, provide 2 references and sign a confidentiality agreement.

You can claim some out-of-pocket expenses, such as travel costs for attending meetings.
