The Mobile Health and Screening Unit (MHSU)

The Mobile Health and Screening Unit (MHSU) is a team of health and social care professionals.

The service provides care to refugees and international protection applicants.

It brings free screening, primary care services and medical advice closer to where they live.

What the MHSU does

The MHSU is run with the Irish medical charity Safetynet Primary Care.

It has a team of nurses, phlebotomists, a GP, a radiographer and migrant support workers.

The service does an initial assessment and looks for urgent medical needs. They can screen for tuberculosis, blood-borne viruses and other health concerns.

Why it is important

Refugees and international protection applicants who have recently arrived in Ireland may have health needs.

The service can:

• support their health and wellbeing
• guide them through the first steps in the healthcare system
• help prevent public health risks

The service is co-funded by the HSE National Social Inclusion Office, the Government of Ireland and the European Union under the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (2021-2027).

The Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration supports this project.
