National Maternity Hospital at St Vincent's University Hospital
The government and the HSE are building a new National Maternity Hospital at St. Vincent’s University Hospital campus. It will replace the current hospital at Holles Street. It will be a 7-story building, bigger than 50,000 square meters. It will connect directly to the adult critical care and other services at St. Vincent’s.
What the hospital offers
The hospital will:
- offer the most advanced women's healthcare
- provide state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care
- deliver the leading maternity services in the country
The hospital will provide care to people living in Dublin and the South East. It will also act as a national specialist referral centre, handling complex cases from maternity units around the country.
The hospital will include:
- 244 beds, each in a private room with its own bathroom (80 more beds than Holles Street)
- 5 operating theatres (2 more than Holles Street)
- 24 birthing rooms
- early pregnancy foetal assessment and ultrasound facilities
- direct access from the maternity hospital theatres and high dependency unit to theatres and ICU at St Vincent’s University Hospital
- increased facilities for colposcopy, ambulatory, gynaecology and urogynaecology services
- dedicated urodynamics room for the study and treatment of bladder incontinence
- regional fertility hub
- inclusion of embedded ‘soft spots’ to allow for future expansion of key clinical areas
- facilities to support all maternity, gynaecological and neonatal services
- training and education spaces for health care professionals.
- a design to support the delivery of services between the National Maternity Hospital and St Vincent’s University Hospital
Current status
Work to prepare the site and move existing services is happening. This work will create a development site, making sure we are ready to begin work in a low-risk environment.
Responses to the tender process for construction of the main hospital are due in 2025. The final budget for this project depends on the outcome of this tender process.
What the hospital will look like
