National Laboratory Information System (MedLIS)

The Laboratory Information System (LIS) will deliver a modern, integrated digital platform for laboratory services across Ireland. This includes the development of new digital ways of studying diseases and other medical conditions. The system will make lab work easier and faster, help doctors and hospitals share information better, and make sure test results are correct and ready on time.

Why the Laboratory Information System matters

Many laboratories currently operate with local or older systems. This can lead to inefficiencies, communication gaps and delays in care. The LIS will provide:

  • a single, patient-centred electronic laboratory record available to all healthcare providers, regardless of location
  • automated specimen tracking, routing and result reporting
  • seamless communication of test requests and results between hospitals, GPs and laboratories
  • secure interfaces with other key systems like Patient Administration Systems, Clinical Portals and Electronic Health Records
  • easy access to management information to support resource planning and service improvement

This will help ensure faster, more coordinated care for patients, and safer, more efficient processes for healthcare staff.

What we’re working on now

Wave 1 of the LIS rollout is underway in the Cavan Monaghan Healthcare Area. We have already delivered 3 workshops. We plan to hold a 4th workshop and go-live for Cavan Monaghan by 4 October 2025.

What’s next for the Laboratory Information System

One this is done, we will get ready for further rollouts. This work includes:

  • final system testing and staff training
  • ongoing stakeholder engagement and feedback
  • planning for future rollout waves in other regions
