Want to empower people to improve their lives? Applications NOW open for HSE Apprentice in Social Work

Would you like a rewarding career helping people cope with loss, crisis or emergencies? The HSE is offering a unique opportunity in the health service as it opens applications for the ‘HSE Apprentice in Social Work’ this week.

Social workers play a unique role in the health service, providing support, information and advice to people to cope with ongoing difficulties in their lives. They are trained to assess people's needs, and place an emphasis on the strengths, abilities and coping strategies of service users and their families.

HSE continues to support the 2-year ‘Apprentice in Social Work’ programme by providing employment while apprentices undertake a QQI Level 9 Masters or Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work in UCC.

It’s offering apprentices

  • A 2 year full-time contract with a starting salary of €33,422, increasing in Year 2
  • UCC course fees fully sponsored by the HSE for the Master of Social Work and the Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work Studies
  • Practical experience under the supervision and mentorship of a professionally qualified social worker
  • An opportunity to build their professional network while completing their academic study
  • Eligibility to register as a professionally qualified Social Worker with CORU on successful completion of the programme
  • Permanent employment post qualification and continued professional development as a social worker
  • Clear career pathway with lateral and promotional opportunities available as a social worker across our services.

Amanda Casey, HSE Chief Social Worker, said:

“Our first group of social work apprentices are beginning their journey into social work, they are gaining practical experience under the supervision and mentorship of a professionally qualified social worker.

“Once they complete the apprenticeship they have a clear career pathway and can register as a professionally qualified social worker.  Social workers empower and support families and individuals in hospitals, mental health services, children’s disability teams, older person services to improve their lives.  I would encourage people to consider this very rewarding career.”
