Tipperary University Hospital marks retirement of staff member after over 50 years’ service

Management and staff of Tipperary University Hospital came together to celebrate the occasion of the retirement of Geraldine Lenihan after 53 years of service to the HSE recently.

Having begun her working life in April 1973, at 17 years of age in Ardkeen Hospital, (now known as University Hospital Waterford), Geraldine worked there until she moved to Waterford Community Services in 1987. During those years, Geraldine contributed greatly to community-based healthcare.

In 2005, Geraldine returned to University Hospital Waterford UHW) as a HIPE coder before moving in 2007 to Tipperary University Hospital (TippUH) where she worked up to the present day.

Speaking on behalf of hospital management and staff to mark the occasion, Ailish Delaney, Operations Manager, Tipperary University Hospital, said: “Fifty‑three years is more than a career, it’s a lifetime of experience, change and commitment. Geraldine has seen it all, adapted to it all, and often reassured others along the way. Anyone who has worked with Geraldine will know her famous words, ‘Sure you will be grand, don’t worry about it. Words that have reassured many colleagues over the years, though some might say she had those thoughts quietly under control already.”

“Geraldine, your contribution cannot be measured simply in years or roles. It’s reflected in the standards you upheld, the colleagues you supported, and the respect you have earned across services. As you begin this next chapter, we wish you good health, happiness, safe travels, endless road trips, and plenty of time to enjoy everything retirement has to offer. We wish you a long, happy, and very well‑deserved retirement.”
