Tipperary University Hospital marked this year’s Palliative Care Week, which took place from 7 September to 13 September by lighting up the building in purple.

This year, the Palliative Care Team worked to raise awareness of this annual campaign and increase understanding of palliative care and its benefits. TippUH Palliative Care team firstly thanked everyone for supporting them and contributing to making this celebration such a success. The team acknowledged the support of the hospital’s management, the maternity service for the use of Freddie’s Lights for the week and to the all the staff of the Technical Service Department for installing the lights. “We would also like to thank you all who joined us in great numbers at our Palliative Care stand on Monday last and participated in the raffle by completing what Palliative Care means to you,” they continued.

Highlighting what Palliative Care is, the team noted: “It’s an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families, facing difficulties associated with life liming illnesses by preventing and relieving suffering.

“This is done through early identification, impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other physical, psychosocial and spiritual issues. End of life care is an important part of palliative care provision. However, receiving palliative care does not necessary mean that you are likely to die soon. Some people receive palliative care on and off for years.”
