Sale of main Baggot Street Hospital Building while retaining site for new HSE Primary Care Centre
Published: 3 October 2025
The Health Service Executive (HSE) today announced plans to sell the main Baggot Street Hospital Building while the HSE, having already applied for planning permission, will retain the Haddington Road side of the site to develop a Primary Care Centre.
Brian O’Connell, National Director, Head of Strategic Health Infrastructure and Capital Delivery, HSE, said: “The decision to sell part of the property was made as it was surplus to HSE requirements and there was no confirmed interest from other state agencies in the premises. The sale of the main Baggot Steet Hospital Building will facilitate the redevelopment of these historic buildings that are not conductive to modern healthcare provision.
“The retained element of the premises will accommodate the development of a new Primary Care Centre that will bring together a range of community-based health and social care services under one roof, providing local residents improved access to GP services, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social work, and other supports subject to a successful outcome of the planning permission process. The development forms part of the HSE’s wider commitment to strengthening community healthcare and ensuring that people can receive high-quality care closer to home.
This significant sale is a further example of HSE's objective to dispose of surplus assets.”
The hospital, which was known officially as the Royal City of Dublin Hospital, was built in 1832 and closed in 1987. The main hospital operations were transferred to St. James's Hospital in 1986. The site functioned as a treatment facility for those with addiction issues until 2019 when it was closed due to the building's condition and age. Parts of the premises, at the Haddington Road junction with Baggot Street, were used as a drug treatment and community facility until 2019.
