Public in Tipperary encouraged to consider all care options

The public in Tipperary are being asked to consider to their care options as Tipperary University Hospital continues to experience high levels of activity with large numbers of people presenting at the Emergency Department.

If your health problem is not an emergency, there are a number of healthcare options in Tipperary. You should contact your GP during normal surgery hours or the GP out of hours service, in the first instance.

The public in Tipperary can consider attending the Cashel Injury Unit, which is located at Our Lady’s Campus, Lower Green, Cashel, E25 P407

The unit is open Monday to Friday from 8am with public attendance (ages 5 years and over) up to 6.30 pm. The unit treats recent injuries that are:

• not life-threatening
• unlikely to need admission to hospital

They can help with many of the injuries people go to the emergency department (ED) for example:

· broken bones, dislocations,

· objects in eyes, ears and nose

· facial, dental and nasal injuries

· minor head injuries,

· sprains and strains,

· cuts, wounds and bites

· minor burns and scalds,

· injuries less than 6 weeks old.

You can get treatment such as x-rays, wound care, suturing, plaster casts and splints, joint reduction procedure for selected dislocations.

Cashel Injury Unit costs €75 to attend. There is no charge to attend the Cashel Injury Unit if a patient has a valid medical card, a GP hospital referral.

The hospital is currently dealing with high levels of activity and patients with serious illnesses. This is also impacting on bed capacity across the hospital. These ongoing pressures are resulting in significant delays being experienced by patients in the ED who are waiting for a bed to become available on a ward.

As always, people who require emergency are encouraged to attend the Emergency Department where they will be prioritised. Patients who attend the ED for routine and non-urgent treatment may experience long waiting times as we treat our sickest patients first.
