Patients and staff at DoP, UHW entertained by High Hopes Choir


The Department of Psychiatry (DoP) acute mental health inpatient facility, which is located on the grounds of University Hospital Waterford (UHW), this week hosted another visit to them by the Waterford High Hopes Choir

The uplifting musical occasion is part of an ongoing Occupational Therapy and Recreation and Recovery activities at the facility.

The 44 bed DoP at UHW serves the Waterford and Wexford catchment area. It is a designated, approved centre for acute mental health inpatient services. Teams of professionals (including medical, specialist and other support staff) are in place to serve the needs of all those who require treatment and support.

Followed by serving of refreshments to all those in attendance, the Waterford High Hopes Choir entertained both service users and staff gathered for their lively recital in the main common room in the DoP.

The High Hopes Choir was founded in 2014 by Conductor David Brophy as part of a documentary with RTE. The Waterford High Hopes Choir continue to promote the healing power of music and assistance to people in their recovery from abuse, mental health issues, serious illness and the effects of homelessness.

Welcoming the group to the DoP for the concert, Sarah Lee of the Occupational Therapy Team there said:

“Waterford High Hopes Choir group always make for a lively presence and are deeply appreciated on their visits to the DoP. Indeed, that was evident once more in the number of patients and staff that joined in the singing and dancing!”
