Paediatric Nurse honoured as an Unsung Hero for her outstanding support to families facing childhood cancer in UHG

The Unsung Hero Award is a heartfelt initiative introduced by Childhood Cancer Ireland with the aim of recognising individuals who quietly make a profound difference in the lives of families affected by childhood cancer. These heroes may not seek recognition, but their impact is immeasurable. Recently Cecily Cassidy, Paediatric Nurse at University Hospital Galway (UHG) was nominated by parents for the Unsung Hero award.

Dr Mairead Brennan, Principal Clinical Psychologist, Childhood Cancer Ireland said, “Each September, we invite parents and caregivers to nominate someone who has made a lasting impact during their childhood cancer journey. This year, Cecily stood out yet again for her unwavering compassion, strength, and heartfelt care.

“We are honoured to present Cecily with a certificate and a small token of appreciation in recognition of her continued service and the lasting impression she leaves on every family she meets. Thank you for being a light during the darkest moments.”

Cecily Cassidy was nominated and recognised as an Unsung Hero during Childhood Cancer Awareness month in September. This special recognition celebrates the quiet champions those who go above and beyond in supporting children and families through the most difficult times of their lives.

Described by families as an “earth angel”, Cecily is not only a dedicated and skilled nurse she is a beacon of calm, empathy, and practical support in the storm. One parent shared, “Cecily is a true angel, a good listener, compassionate, a fantastic nurse very observant and very thorough. She can read the room with just one look and give you that strength you may need on the day. Always there with a pack of snacks if you're leaving by ambulance for Crumlin. Her talents also go as far as moving cars to get you out of the car park. She is one of the true unsung heroes in healthcare and I'm so glad to have had the privilege to meet her.”

Another nomination echoed the sentiment, “Cecily is a wonderful person, not just a wonderful nurse. She's an earth angel who really had a huge impact on our journey.”
