Newly refurbished Cashel Injury Unit extends opening hours from 31 August 2026

The opening hours of the newly refurbished Cashel Injury Unit will be extended to 8am to 8pm, five days a week from 31 August 2026.

Following its refurbishment at a cost €1.3 million approx, the unit is now under the governance of Tipperary University Hospital and represents a major investment in modern healthcare facilities for the communities in Cashel and the wider hinterland of Tipperary, Waterford and north Kilkenny.

The Cashel Injury Unit provides an alternative access for patients (aged 5 years and over) for the management of minor injuries, providing an alternative to attending an emergency department, from Monday to Friday (8am to 8pm with the last patient seen at 6.30pm). No appointment is required to attend the injury unit. Patients can self-present, be referred by a GP or be directed to the unit by an emergency department for treatment.

A complete episode of care for the patient can be provided, and it is equipped to treat conditions such as:

• broken bones, sprains and strains, from knees to toes, from collarbone to fingertips.
• minor facial injuries (including oral, dental and nasal injuries).
• minor scalds and burns.
• wounds, bites, cuts, grazes and scalp lacerations (cuts).
• small abscesses and boils.
• splinters and fish hooks.
• objects stuck in eyes, ears or nose.
• minor head injuries (fully conscious patients, who did not have loss of consciousness or vomit after the head injury).

“It will help with the treatment of unscheduled, non life threatening or limb threatening injuries and support in meeting the demands on Tipperary University Hospital. With these new extended operating hours, we anticipate faster access to diagnostic and radiography services and improved patient outcomes for people in Tipperary South and its wider communities in Waterford and north Kilkenny.”

Mr Waseem Swati, Clinical Director, Tipperary University Hospital added: “Those requiring care can avoid long waits in the emergency department by attending our injury unit, for non life-threatening injuries or care and we are encouraging the public to consider this as an alternative care option to attending our often busy emergency department at Tipperary University Hospital. If you have an injury that can be treated at our injury unit, our expert team can treat you efficiently and quickly, and most people are treated and home quickly.”

If a patient’s condition cannot be managed within the injury unit, staff will ensure they are directed to the most appropriate service for further care. Patients without a referral will incur a cost of €75. You will not have to pay this fee if you have a medical card, a referral letter from a GP or if you are transferred from an emergency department.
