Monaghan Hospital’s Healing Garden earns national recognition
Published: 21 October 2026
Monaghan Hospital has been named one of just four national finalists in the Age Friendly Environment category at the National Age Friendly Awards 2026, recognising a community-supported garden designed to support rehabilitation, people living with dementia, and remembrance.
The project, “A Healing Garden for Rehabilitation, Dementia & Remembrance”, transformed an outdoor area at the hospital into a welcoming space for patients, families and staff. Its selection as a finalist at the awards in Limerick this month recognises the work of hospital staff and the wider community in creating an environment that supports care, wellbeing and connection.
Lynda McGrory and her team at Monaghan Hospital were central to bringing the garden to life. Their dedication to this projection helped turn an ambition for a more supportive outdoor environment into a resource for patients and those closest to them.
Local businesses, schools, community groups, patients, families and staff supported the project through donations, fundraising and on-site assistance. That shared effort has created a space where patients can spend time outdoors, families can be together, and people can find a quiet moment for reflection and remembrance.
Laura Waters, General Manager of Cavan and Monaghan Hospital, said:
“This national recognition is a tribute to everyone who helped bring the Healing Garden to life. I particularly want to acknowledge Lynda McGrory and her team at Monaghan Hospital, whose commitment have been central to this project.
“They have shown what can be achieved when staff and the community come together with a shared purpose: making the hospital experience better for patients and families. We are very grateful to the local businesses, schools, community groups and individuals who contributed their time, skills and generosity.
“To be named among the national finalists is an achievement that everyone involved can take pride in.”
The garden brings together rehabilitation, dementia support and remembrance in one setting, reflecting the importance of care environments that respond to people’s needs and offer opportunities for comfort, independence and social connection.
HSE Dublin and North East congratulates the team at Monaghan Hospital and all the community partners whose contribution made the project possible.
