Drop in to a free Dementia Information Afternoon at the HSE South West South City Hub at Westfield in Ballincollig, on Monday 22 June, from 2pm to 5pm and meet local groups offering guidance, advice and support.
Hosted by the Integrated Care Programme for Older Persons (ICPOP) South City Hub Ballincollig, this HSE South West event brings together a broad mix of community and voluntary partners sharing details on available services. The session is open to anyone wishing to learn more about what’s offered locally; whether for themselves, a relative, or someone they assist.
Representatives from SAGE Advocacy, the Alzheimer Society of Ireland, Alone, Family Carers Ireland, Reablement Cork, Westgate Foundation, Age Friendly Homes and others will be available to speak with attendees throughout the afternoon.
Dr Tim Dukelow, Consultant Geriatrician, HSE South West said:
“People often tell us that they don’t know where to start when looking for dementia-specific supports. By bringing key stakeholders together in one place, we hope to make it easier for people with dementia, and families, to connect with the right information, guidance, and community services. This event is about making those first steps more accessible and ensuring people know that they are not alone.”
More than 65,000 people in Ireland are currently living with dementia, a figure projected to exceed 150,000 by 2045. Over 4,000 individuals under 65 have younger‑onset dementia, and an estimated 60,000 family members and friends provide vital care. With the condition affecting people of all ages, early access to clear information and community‑based supports remains essential.
Gemma McCarthy, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, HSE South West said:
“Staying socially connected, keeping active and maintaining good heart health all play an important role in protecting brain function. A balanced diet, engaging hobbies and learning new skills support long‑term cognitive wellbeing, while hearing checks, good‑quality sleep and seeking advice early if concerns arise can all help reduce risk.”
Events like this aim to raise awareness, reduce stigma and encourage people to seek support if they have concerns about memory, brain health, or caring responsibilities. The event is free to attend and no booking is required. Parking is available at Westfield.
