Letterkenny University Hospital Celebrates Excellence in Clinical Mentorship at Preceptorship Awards

Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH), in collaboration with the Nurse Practice Development Unit, recently hosted its Preceptorship Awards Ceremony. The event celebrated the dedication and professionalism of hospital based and community-based preceptors who have made outstanding contributions to the education of BSc (Hons) Undergraduate Nursing Students from Atlantic Technological University during their clinical placements. Their support ensures students are not only welcomed into clinical environments but also equipped with the skills, confidence, and knowledge to provide high quality, evidence-based care.

Aligned with the standards set by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), the role of the preceptor is pivotal in nursing education. These clinical educators are instrumental in bridging academic learning with real world practice. Their responsibilities include helping students adapt to the clinical setting, facilitating the integration of theory into practice, assessing clinical competence, and modelling professionalism and compassionate care.

A total of 21 Preceptors were nominated for the awards, representing a wide range of clinical disciplines, including Medical, Surgical, Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Emergency Department, Theatre, Day Services, Community Hospital, and Public Health Nursing.

Three overall award recipients were honoured for their exceptional commitment to the role and their positive impact on student learning and development. These were Marie Anne McDaid CNM2 Theatre, Nollaig Simms Staff Nurse Medical 5 and Catherine McLaughlin Staff Nurse Emergency Department.

Their dedication, empathy, and willingness to share their expertise are at the heart of our healthcare system. Today’s ceremony is a well-deserved celebration of their incredible contributions.”

The guidance and mentorship provided by our preceptors is invaluable. Their support not only fosters clinical competence but also inspires confidence and compassion in future nurses.”
