HSE Welcomes Significant Investment to Enhance and Expand Healthcare Services Across Donegal


HSE West and North West, is pleased to announce significant progress in the delivery of major capital projects across Donegal under the HSE’s Building and Equipment Capital Programme 2026. The HSE welcomes significant investment and commitment to infrastructure in the Donegal area as part of this plan.

This investment will enhance healthcare infrastructure, expand capacity, and modernise facilities directly benefiting patients, families, and frontline staff throughout the region.

A number of key transformative projects across Donegal are advancing, strengthening both hospital and community-based services and ensuring care is delivered more efficiently and closer to home, these include:

  • Letterkenny – Replacement and extension of Community Nursing Unit (110 beds) and development of a Medical Rehabilitation facility.
  • Letterkenny University Hospital:
  • Planning and design of a new surgical hub.
  • Phased works include repair of flat roof membranes and balcony spalling.
  • Fire safety upgrades to the medical ward block.
  • Construction of a new heating centre and boiler replacement.
  • Review of development control plans.
  • Expansion of the Renal Dialysis Unit.
  • Upgrades to electrical infrastructure.
  • Development of an Aseptic Compounding Unit
  • Progression of DCP study at LUH which will allow progress of ED extension.
  • Falcarragh – Refurbishment of Community Nursing Unit.
  • Buncrana – Refurbishment of Community Nursing Unit.
  • Letterkenny – Extension to existing Chronic Disease Management Hub to provide support accommodation.
  • Letterkenny – New build for Integrated Care Programme for Chronic Disease (ICPDM) and Integrated Care Programme for Older Persons (ICPOP). Redevelopment of existing building.
  • Letterkenny Injury Unit – New facility to support minor injuries care.
  • Donegal Hospice – New extension providing 4 bedrooms with family/visitor accommodation; 4 existing bedrooms converted for administration/clinical use; overall bed capacity unchanged. Funded by Donegal Hospice.
  • Buncrana – Renovation of existing building for a new Ambulance Base.
  • Lifford – New Primary Care Centre.
  • Ramelton Community Nursing Unit – Refurbishment for HIQA compliance.
  • St Joseph’s Hospital, Stranorlar – Refurbishment for HIQA compliance.
  • Lifford – New Community Nursing Unit.
  • Cleary Centre, Donegal Town – New Disability Adult Day Services facility.
  • Killygordon area – Purchase and refurbishment of Disability Services residential dwelling to support decongregation and community living.
  • Carndonagh – New build on HSE-owned site for residential dwelling to support decongregation and community living in Disability Services.
  • Carndonagh area – Purchase and refurbishment of residential dwelling to support decongregation and community living in Disability Services.
  • Letterkenny area - Refurbishment and extension of HSE-owned property for decongregation and community living in Disability Services.
  • Stranorlar area – Development of a new-build property on a HSE-owned site for decongregation and community living in Disability Services.
  • Stranorlar – Purchase and rebuild of property for decongregation and community living in Disability Services.

Dermot Monaghan, Integrated Healthcare Area Manager, Donegal welcomed the announcement saying: “This substantial investment represents a major step forward for healthcare services in Donegal. These projects will modernise facilities, increase capacity, and improve access to care for patients across our communities.

“By strengthening both hospital and community-based services, we are ensuring that high-quality, patient-centred care is available closer to home for the people of Donegal."
