HSE surgical hubs

The HSE plans to open 6 surgical hubs to increase the capacity for day case surgery and minor procedures.

Each hub plans to deliver 10,000 day case surgeries and minor procedures, and 18,500 outpatient consultations annually.

Each hub will have:

• 2 operating theatres
• 2 minor procedure rooms
• areas where patients can recover after a procedure

They will provide a range of day case specialties, for example:

• general surgery
• dermatology
• gynaecology
• ophthalmology
• ENT
• orthopaedics
• pain relief
• plastic surgery
• urology
• vascular surgery
• hepato-biliary surgery
• oral and maxillofacial surgery

The hubs will be for non-complex procedures, for example:

• varicose veins
• hernia repair
• other keyhole surgery

Patients will have their procedure, recover and go home the same day.

The hubs will be in:

• South Dublin
• North Dublin
• Galway
• Cork
• Waterford
• Limerick
