HSE South West Winter Wellness press release – your alternatives to busy emergency departments

HSE South West reminds the people of Cork to consider all their options before attending busy emergency departments this winter.

HSE South West reminds the people of Cork to consider all their options before attending busy emergency departments this winter.

Local experts are reminding people to think three times:

Sonya Cotter, HSE manager for Cork North and East said that it’s important to chose the right care so that you and your family get the support you need as quickly as possible. Your local pharmacy or GP should be your first points of contact when feeling unwell. Many common illnesses and concerns can be treated quickly and safely without attending an Emergency Department.

Ms Cotter said:

“Your pharmacist and GP know your medical history and are better placed to better manage your care; they can also help direct you to the ED if it’s necessary. By thinking twice and contacting your pharmacy or GP services first, you get quicker access to the care you need—while helping keep Emergency Departments available for those who urgently need life-saving treatment, such as chest pain, severe breathing difficulties, stroke symptoms, serious accidents or sudden collapse. Choosing the right care helps you get the best treatment quickly and keeps emergency services free for those who need them most. Stay well this winter and don't forget your flu and COVID vaccinations if you're eligible.”

She added that your GP can offer support for ongoing or non-urgent conditions that need medical review, repeat prescriptions, or if your symptoms aren't improving with pharmacy advice; while SouthDoc offers support for urgent problems that can’t wait until your usual GP is open. Injury Units can treat non life-threatening injuries like broken bones, dislocations, sprains and strains.

Priscilla Lynch, HSE manager for Cork South and West, added that SouthDoc provides timely, convenient, and well-coordinated care for many non-emergency situations, offering an alternative to visiting the emergency department.

“SouthDoc, offers faster, more accessible, and more coordinated care than the emergency department for many non-emergency situations. By providing direct access to doctors and nurses, supporting continuity with your GP, and ensuring patient safety and confidentiality, SouthDoc helps keep the Emergency Department available for true emergencies while caring for the community at every step.”

Here’s why choosing SouthDoc can be the best option for you and your family:
