Caring for Kerry - fast expert care with shorter waits at Bantry and Mallow injury units
Published: 6 January 2026
The Emergency Department (ED) at University Hospital Kerry (UHK) remains very busy and should be used only when urgent emergency care is needed.
As part of the HSE South West Caring for Kerry campaign, we are seeking to build awareness on how to access urgent care at our Injury Units in the Region.
Injury units can look after more than you think, and our injury units in Mallow, Bantry and even Cork city are as easily accessible to some Kerry residents as UHK. Killarney is just one hour from the Mallow injury unit, and Tralee is one hour and 20 minutes from the Mallow injury unit. If you’re in South Kerry, Bantry is closer than UHK and could give you the expert care you need quickly.
Local Injury Units often have shorter waiting times and provide consultant-led assessment and treatment, including X-rays, fracture treatment, burns treatment, and wound care.
The Injury Units at Bantry and Mallow are open from 8am to 8pm for patients aged 10 years and over. For full details, visit hse.ie/injuryunits
Julie O’Neill, HSE Manager for Kerry, said:
“Many urgent injuries can be treated at our Injury Units, which often provide the fastest access to specialised care. Our Emergency Department at UHK remains very busy due to high demand and seasonal illnesses, so patients with less urgent problems may experience longer waits as we prioritise those most seriously ill. We’re asking people to choose the most appropriate service for their needs—using Injury Units and community services where suitable—to support our hospital teams and keep emergency care available for those who need it most.”
Mary Fitzgerald, General Manager for University Hospital Kerry added:
“Our Injury Units in Mallow and Bantry can treat a wide range of urgent problems—from suspected fractures to burns and wound care—often with shorter waiting times. They’re closer than you might think, and our teams are ready to treat you quickly and safely. Please check hse.ie/injuryunits before travelling.”
