HSE South West launches winter vaccine campaign

Don’t delay, get vaccinated today - HSE South West is urging everyone who is eligible to get their free flu and Covid-19 vaccines to stay safe, healthy and protected this winter.
Winter is a time when cold and flu viruses spread quickly. Vaccines are the best shield to keep you, your family and your community safe from getting very sick. The sooner you get your winter vaccines, the sooner your body builds up protection.

Dr Anne Sheahan, Regional Director of Public Health, HSE South West, said:
“Both flu and Covid-19 can be very serious, so don’t let yourself or your family be struck down by either this winter. People can get very ill from both flu and Covid-19 and end up in hospital. Those with existing underlying conditions are especially at risk. If you are eligible for the vaccines, I strongly encourage you to get them as soon as possible.

“Each winter season, our immunity to viruses drops, so it is important to top up your protection. No-one wants to spend their winter in a hospital bed, so please protect yourself - and others - by getting your vaccinations now. It’s often tempting to put off your appointment until ‘later’, but sometime flu or Covid arrives before ‘later’ does. So, make your plan and your appointment today.”

You can get both the free Flu and Covid-19 vaccines if you are:
• 60 years old or older
• 6 months old or older with a long-term health condition (like asthma, diabetes, or heart problems)
• Pregnant (this protects both you and your baby)

You can get a free Flu vaccine if you are:
• A child aged between 2 and 17 years old - this is given as a quick and painless nasal spray, not a needle
• A healthcare worker
• A carer or if you live with someone who has a weak immune system

You can get your winter vaccines at your local GP, or your local pharmacy. Most pharmacies offer free walk-in or bookable vaccine slots. HSE South West vaccination teams will also visit residential care homes and schools to make sure everyone is protected.

Visit hse.ie/services/find-a-vaccine for information on how to get the vaccine.
