HSE South West chest pain clinic improves access to cardiology care at CUH

HSE South West is pleased to announce a new nurse-led chest pain clinic at Cork University Hospital (CUH).

Patients in Cork and Kerry experiencing chest pain can now access faster assessment and specialist cardiology care through the Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic (RACPC) at CUH, following referral from their GP. This new service ensures people receive timely assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning, helping to reduce waiting times and avoid unnecessary hospital admissions.

The Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic is led by Advanced Nurse Practitioners Jennifer Aherne and Valerie Lynch and operates under the clinical governance of Consultant Cardiologist Dr Risteard O'Lionaird.

Valerie Lynch, Candidate Advanced Nurse Practitioner with the Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic, said:
"The introduction of telephone triage has transformed how referrals are managed, enabling us to review patients more quickly, prioritise those who need specialist input and reduce unnecessary hospital visits. This streamlined approach ensures resources are used effectively, while delivering a more responsive service for patients and GPs."

GPs can refer adults with new, stable chest pain through Healthlink for rapid assessment. The clinic focuses on:
• Faster access to specialist assessment for people with stable cardiac chest pain
• Early evaluation of symptoms
• Timely access to diagnostic tests
• Prompt treatment and support to reduce cardiovascular risk

Jennifer Aherne, Advanced Nurse Practitioner with the Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic, said:
"Those who require a face-to-face appointment are seen within 14 days. We provide a comprehensive cardiac assessment and work closely with the consultant cardiology team to arrange any necessary investigations. Just as importantly, we support people to understand and manage their cardiovascular risk factors, helping to improve their long-term heart health."

The clinic represents a major step forward in providing timely, high-quality cardiac care and supporting better health outcomes for communities across Cork and Kerry.
