HSE Health App 4.0 release: Your waiting list and GP referral status now available on HSE App
Published: 27 November 2025
The HSE has today added new features to its health app launched earlier this year, allowing patients to keep track of where they are at on their patient journey as well as giving them access to more personal health information.
The app will now show patients the day case and inpatient waiting lists they are on, meaning they will no longer need to rely on physical letters or verbal updates to confirm they are on a waiting list. Patients will receive a notification when an appointment is made.
It will also show general referrals made for them by their GP. General referrals account for approximately 85% of referrals and the remainder, known as specialist referrals, will be available on the app next year.
Anyone aged 16 and over can download the app for free from Google Play or the App Store, The HSE app is one of the first initiatives delivered as part of Digital for Care, Ireland’s health and social care digital framework.
Another update is the availability of health data for patients on the Structured Chronic Disease Management Programme including diagnosis of condition, and record of vitals and measurements. Further enhancements include a trial of a post Prostate Cancer Care Support treatment program (at University Hospital Galway, UHG).
Minister for Health, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill TD, said: “This latest app release offers patients access to more of their own health information showing the pace of development since the HSE Health App was launched in February of this year. By enhancing the app to provide better visibility of referrals sent by their GP and more information on waiting lists, we are taking one more step towards empowering patients. For example, when you get your flu vaccination, which I am encouraging everyone eligible to do, that vaccination record will sit alongside these updates and give you more control over your own health.”
Damien McCallion, HSE Chief Technology and Transformation Officer, said; “This new release of the HSE app is another milestone in our ongoing effort to empower patients, improve access to health services through digital innovation and provide information on their care through the Heath App.
“The addition of day case and inpatient waiting lists and GP referral features will enable patients to get up-to-date information about their patient journey.
“Approximately 500 people are downloading the Health App every day. There have been over 190k app downloads and over 275k appointments displayed to app users since it was launched providing a great benefit to our patients. It’s also now the number one free health app in Ireland.
“We are transforming and improving healthcare for people in Ireland through Digital for Care, with the app being one element of a wide range of innovative digital initiatives that put the patient at the centre of everything we do.”
