Free HSE Diabetes Programme Invites West Cork Residents to Discover Diabetes in a Simple, Supportive Way
Published: 9 March 2026
The HSE South West is encouraging people living with type 2 diabetes to sign up for Discover Diabetes, a free, four‑week education programme designed to help people better understand and manage their condition. Run by registered dietitians, the course offers clear, practical guidance on food, physical activity, blood glucose levels and medications, cutting through the confusing and often conflicting information found online.
More than 270,000 people in Ireland are living with type 2 diabetes, and many say they feel unsure where to turn for reliable advice. Discover Diabetes provides trustworthy support in a friendly, small‑group setting.
Tim, from West Cork, was diagnosed in Spring 2025 and says the course gave him the confidence he was missing at the start.
“I was confused when I was first diagnosed. There’s so much information on the internet I could not get my head around it,” he said. After attending the programme, Tim lost weight, improved his blood sugars and now feels in control of his health. “I have an active lifestyle now. I have normal food, not special meals. And the support keeps me motivated.”
Discover Diabetes courses run throughout the year with sessions starting regularly. People can take part shortly after diagnosis or many years later. Each programme runs for four weeks and includes optional follow‑up support to help participants continue their progress.
In West Cork, sessions are held in:
- Skibbereen
- Clonakilty
- Bantry
People can be referred by their GP, practice nurse or public health nurse, or they may self‑register online at https://bit.ly/diabetes-courses
Discover Diabetes aims to replace fear and confusion with understanding, confidence and practical skills that last.
Sarah McAleer, HSE General Manager, Integrated Healthcare Area lead for Enhanced Community Care, adds:
“This free programme makes a real and lasting difference. We strongly encourage anyone living with type 2 diabetes to take part.”
“Many people feel overwhelmed when they’re diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Discover Diabetes gives people the tools and confidence they need to manage their health in a realistic and sustainable way.”
