First spaces in new multi storey car park at Wexford General Hospital become available for use

In line with its phased opening over the next few weeks, a first part of the new multi storey car park at Wexford General Hospital (WHG) became available for use from Wednesday (8 April 2026).

With its construction under way (by Tom O’ Brien Construction Ltd) since January of last year, when fully operational the multi storey car park will provide for 356 car parking spaces over seven split levels and four stories.

The 11,624 m2 multi storey car park features in a major civil and groundworks programme at WGH, which includes the realignment of the main entrance road and enabling works for the new multi-storey Somerton Wing (97 bed ward) development at WGH.

The multi storey car park will replace the main car park that has been on the Newtown Rd. side of the hospital . Parking charges will be the same as the current rate on site at WGH, long term rates and concession parking available. Arrangements remain in place on site at WGH for those with disabilities and to facilitate temporary set-down.

A tender process for the construction of the Somerton Wing (the footprint of which will cover the previous main car parking area of WGH) is nearing completion. An Autumn 2026 start date, followed by a 28 month construction programme is anticipated regarding this development. The Somerton Wing will consist of six storeys and its accommodation will comprise inpatient wards with 97 single occupancy en-suite bedrooms. This is a feature which will offer many advantages in relation to patient care, comfort, dignity and infection control.

Accommodation in the new 9,300m2 Somerton Wing will be arranged around two landscaped courtyards. Ancillary accommodation provided at each ward includes staff base, utilities, meeting room, stores and visitor rooms. New staff changing facilities, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy rooms will also be provided at lower ground floor level.
