Boost for neonatal services in Mid West as new consultant appointed
Published: 20 October 2026
HSE Mid West is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Rachel Mullaly as Consultant Neonatalogist at University Maternity Hospital Limerick (UMHL).
Her appointment brings the number of consultant neonatologists in the Mid West region to seven.
Dr Mullaly’s appointment to UMHL’s established neonatology team will strengthen specialist care offerings for newborn babies and their families across the Mid West region in neonatal haemodynamics, which refers to the study and management of blood flow and cardiac function. She regularly presents her work in these areas at national and international meetings.
The appointment of Dr Mullaly follows a significant investment in Limerick’s neonatal environment, with a two-storey extension and refurbishment worth €9.7 million being completed at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in 2025, creating an improved environment for babies, parents and staff.
Dr Mullaly is the holder of an MSc in Neonatology from the University of Southampton and a PhD in Neonatal Haemodynamics from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
Commenting on her appointment at UMHL, Dr Mullaly said
“I am delighted to be joining the neonatal team at University Maternity Hospital Limerick and to have the opportunity to contribute to the care of babies and their families across the Mid West region. Neonatal medicine is a highly specialised area of healthcare where clinical expertise, teamwork and compassionate, family-centred care are essential. I am looking forward to working with colleagues across the HSE’s maternity and paediatric services to build on the great work that is already taking place at UMHL.”
Dr Mullaly recently returned from Melbourne, Australia, where she completed a year of advanced fellowship training at the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Royal Women’s Hospital.
Outside of medicine and her profession, Dr Mullaly is a keen musician and classical violinist and looks forward to continuing those pursuits in Limerick.
