Birth Reflection Clinic at Wexford General Hospital recognised at Irish Healthcare Centre Awards 2025

The Birth Reflection Clinic at Wexford General Hospital won the Midwifery Project of the Year 2025 at the recent Irish Healthcare Centre Awards 2025

The Birth Reflection Clinic at Wexford General Hospital won the Midwifery Project of the Year 2025 at the recent Irish Healthcare Centre Awards 2025.

The event took place at the Clayton Hotel, Dublin recently and saw the maternity team’s dedication to enhancing maternity care at Wexford General Hospital acknowledged with the award.

The Birth Reflection Clinic was launched in October 2023 by Advanced Midwife Practitioner, Orla Mongan, who was inspired by feedback from HIQA reports and the National Maternity Experience Survey. Recognising the need among women for more space and time to reflect on their birth experience, Orla developed the Birth Reflection Clinic to offer a listening service with compassionate debriefing and support for pregnant and postnatal women attending maternity services at Wexford General Hospital.

Speaking about the award, Orla Mongan, Advance Midwife Practitioner, Wexford Maternity Unit, Wexford General Hospital, said: “The team is delighted with this recent recognition at the Irish Healthcare Centre Awards 2025. This service has received great support from the hospital and the maternity management team, consultant obstetricians, midwives and the multidisciplinary team.

“It’s about enhancing the understanding of care received by women during labour and birth and this honour reflects the dedication behind the service and the meaningful difference it’s making in women’s lives. Feedback from women attending the clinic continues to guide us and to improve our maternity service overall.”

Birth Reflection Clinic:

The clinic is held in Ely hospital, offering a calm and accessible environment for women who have given birth in Wexford Maternity Unit, or who are pregnant and are attending WGH and wish to discuss a previous birth elsewhere. The service is free of charge and can be accessed through appointments by self-referral or referral from healthcare professionals such as Midwives, Public Health nurses, Physiotherapists, or Doctors. Birth Reflection is a listening service and where appropriate, women are guided to additional support services, if needed. The response to the clinic has been very positive, with many women saying how valuable and healing the experience has been.
