Balancing Stress – free online programme to help manage stress

HSE Mid West is encouraging people across the Mid West region to take small but meaningful steps to improve their mental wellbeing through Balancing Stress, a new free online programme developed by psychologists and mental health experts.

The programme offers practical, easy‑to‑use tools to help people understand stress, manage worry and anxiety, cope with low mood, strengthen relationships, and build long‑term resilience. Each video session lasts about 35 minutes and can be completed anytime, anywhere, and at your own pace.

Balancing Stress is based on two evidence‑based approaches:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – managing problems by changing unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour to improve how we feel
  • Positive Psychology – a relatively newer form of psychology focusing on strengths, resilience, kindness and human flourishing

Participants can choose the sessions most relevant to what they’re experiencing at any given time, whether that’s anxiety, relationship challenges, low mood, or stress related to work or family life. They will learn to focus on what matters most to them, discovering practical breathing exercises, relaxation tips, and coping techniques.

Dr Aisling Cusack, Senior Clinical Psychologist, HSE Mid West, said:

Recent studies are showing high rates of stress across Ireland with some studies ranking it amongst the most stressed nations in the world. I can see the rising impact of stress both in my personal and professional relationships. Having an understanding of stress and anxiety can be really helpful for us when we are supporting ourselves through difficult times. The Balancing Stress programme is a free, easy to use and accessible mental health support, packed with information and useful strategies. What I really like about it is that you can choose the sessions that relate to how you’re feeling and what matters most to you at a given time.

Principal Psychologist and course presenter Dr Niamh Clarke said “Stress affects everyone and this resource empowers every individual, family, and community to take control. Whether you dip into one session, a few, or all of the programme, it’s about finding support, practical tips, and reassurance that fits your needs, at your own pace and in your own way. We encourage people to join, share, and support one another.”
