All Nursing, Midwifery and Health/Social Care graduates to be offered HSE jobs in 2024

  • Graduates to be offered permanent contracts of employment in 2024
  • All potential applicants should register on the HSE Career hub

The HSE has decided to offer permanent contracts of employment to all Nursing and Midwifery graduates and all Health/Social Care (HSCP) graduates this year. More than 1,000 HSCP final year students and 1,600 nurses and midwives can now qualify for these roles, on completion of their courses and placements. The recruitment of as many of these graduates as possible will be fundamental to the delivery and development of services within the HSE. The move is designed to address shortages of frontline staff in key areas.

Anne Marie Hoey, HSE National Director of HR added: “Today’s announcement represents significant opportunities for graduates across the health sector. Opportunities such as those in Speech and Language services, Occupational Therapists (OTs) and Physiotherapists are particularly focused on our disability services. We hope this will lead to more people working in those teams and improve services for our clients and their families. Social worker and dietician roles are vital in mental health services. This initiative is key to the way healthcare should be provided, with multi-disciplinary teams that can take care of our patients' and service users needs.”

“All, Nursing and Midwifery graduates from Irish nursing schools have been offered a permanent contract, following a competitive capability assessment. This has proven to be a very successful initiative leading the HSE to extend this offer to health and social care roles.”

Bernard Gloster, HSE CEO added: “I am delighted to be able to offer every one of the graduates in nursing and midwifery as well as a host of other roles in the health and social care professions a career in the HSE this year.”

“To be in the position to strengthen our teams across the country is very welcome, in particular in the areas of disability and mental health services. This recruitment initiative is central to our drive toward universal healthcare and delivering health services our growing and ageing population need.”

HSCPs are the second largest clinical group in the Irish health service, second only to Nursing and Midwifery. HSCPs account for 25% of the clinical workforce and 14% of the overall health service workforce. Roles offered in this initiative include Dietitians, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Chiropodists / Podiatrists, Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs), Social Workers, Medical Scientists, Radiation Therapists, Clinical Measurement, Audiologists and Radiographers. The new staff hired from this announcement will provide services for people with complex needs nationwide and allow the HSE to shorten waiting times while providing a more comprehensive service of care.

Graduate roles in the HSE have an extremely high retention rate, demonstrating a commitment from the HSE to work with employees to grow and develop.

Final year students will complete their exams in early Summer and they will gain their professional registration in early Autumn. This will enable them to take up their permanent position shortly afterwards.
