The Trauma Coordinator CNM2 acts as a resource and facilitator to ensure patients with traumatic injuries receive timely, appropriate and coordinated assessment and treatment in line with HSE policies and procedures.
This will involve making best use of existing resources, working with the multidisciplinary team to ensure a consistent high quality approach to patient care management towards definitive treatment and discharge.

Key objectives include;
• Providing a patient focus,
• Reduction in NCHD workload by developing Nurse prescribing and Ordering of ionising radiation.
• Improved communication and effectiveness of Multidisciplinary team members,
• Reduce avoidable pre and post operative delay in Care pathway,
• Contribute towards improved theatre utilisation,
• Minimise preoperative fasting as per Hospital policy and avoiding unnecessary fasting,
• Improve measurement of objective key standard and performance indicators (pre and post operative) such as those within TARN and the Irish Hip Fracture Database
• Reduction in average length of stay
• Reduction in clinical incidents relating to delayed surgery
• Contribute towards optimise theatre utilisation.
• Improve the quality and standard of the patient care pathway and experience

The trauma coordinator will work with relevant staff in further developing skills and competencies in the care management of patients with traumatic injuries. This post may develop in line with service requirements towards the development of specialist skills and conversion to a specialist nursing practice role in Orthopaedic Trauma Nursing.

The trauma co-ordinator will be embedded within the clinical team working along side frontline emergency department staff, the orthopaedic trauma team and the anaesthetic and theatre teams. The focus is on; reducing delays in the care pathway, improving the patient experience, care management process and patient outcomes through continual quality improvement. This approach will be grounded in evidence based practice.
