Respite Break Volunteers
Volunteers play a key role in supporting participants to enjoy a safe, enjoyable, and inclusive respite experience. Volunteers stay onsite for the full duration of each respite break, which runs from Friday to Monday on various dates throughout the year. Each break typically includes approximately four volunteers, alongside SBHI staff and eight participants. Where possible, new volunteers are paired with experienced volunteers to provide support and guidance.
Key Responsibilities
Encourage and support participants to engage fully in activities throughout the respite break
Promote and facilitate participants’ independence while providing assistance where required
Support participants with personal care needs (including showering, toileting, dressing, etc.) where necessary – levels of support vary depending on individual participant needs
Work closely with nursing staff, who provide guidance and support in relation to participant care requirements
Ensure the safety, wellbeing, and comfort of all participants at all times
Report to the Respite Coordinator and communicate any concerns or updates appropriately
Attend team meetings and briefings as required
Assist with kitchen and general housekeeping duties where needed
Contribute positively to creating a welcoming, respectful, and enjoyable environment for participants
Training and Support
All new volunteers and staff are required to attend training prior to participating in respite breaks. Training includes:
Manual and patient handling training
Introduction to SBHI services
Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults and Child Protection
Disability Awareness
Personal Care training
Volunteer Requirements
To become an SBHI Volunteer, applicants must:
Be 18 years of age or older
Demonstrate a positive, enthusiastic, and flexible attitude
