Notify the HSE about operating a sunbed business
All sunbed business operators must, by law, notify the Health Service Executive (HSE) of their premises once per year, on or before 1 March. You have pay a notification fee of €120 per premises.

Before you start
You will need the following information:
- business details – name, address, and contact information
- company name, address, company registration number
- details of sunbed premises you operate
- valid email address – for confirmation and updates
- payment – €120 per premises
What happens next
Once you submit your sunbed business notification:
- you will get an email receipt - keep it safe as this is your documentation
- your business will be listed on the official HSE Sunbed Business Notification Register
- we may be contact if we need further information
You must renew your notification every year by 1st March for each of your sunbed premises.

What you need to know
There is guidance for sunbed operators in the Public Health (Sunbeds) Act 2014.
The HSE may inspect your premises at any time to check if you comply with the law.
If you do not notify the HSE
If you do not notify the HSE about your sunbed business, you are breaking the law and will have to pay €300 fine per missed notification. You could also face prosecution under the Public Health (Sunbeds) Act 2014.
Rules when operating sunbeds
When operating sunbeds you must follow the rules under the Public Health (Sunbeds) Act 2014.
Here are some of those rules:
- No one under 18 can use or hire a sunbed.
- No one under 18 can be in a sunbed room (unless working there).
- Sunbeds must be supervised at all times.
- You must provide protective eyewear, which complies with the relevant standard, and clear health warnings.
- You cannot offer promotions like “happy hour” or free sunbed time.
- You must display warning signs and give users health information.
